Paper and Gold：Jewelry with a Dramatic Shimmer, “ikue” At first glance, these piece appear to be made of precious metal but they are crafted from bundles of layered paper as the brand name “ikue” (multi layered in Japanese) suggests. 100 sheets of paper are stacked as one and the edges gilded using Japanese Sanpokin bookbinding technique to create delicate color schemes that blend the base color of the paper and gold foil. Sanpokin is used to gild books such as Bibles and diaries and it also helps to prevent discoloration, shrinkage, insect damage and staining.
